Transport in the kingdom has developed rapidly, reflecting the country’s ambition to modernise and diversify its economy. For decades, buses were the primary means of moving large numbers of people across vast distances. Companies such as SAPTCO have operated routes that reach nearly every part of the country, from major urban centres to remote desert towns. Travellers who wanted affordable tickets and reliable, if sometimes slower, services often turned to the bus network.
The introduction of modern rail changed this picture dramatically. Saudi Arabia’s high speed projects, most notably
the Haramain train, were designed to connect key cities with both efficiency and comfort. Railways offer a new level of service for domestic and international travellers alike, with air conditioned cabins, smooth rides, and high safety standards. For the first time, people can travel between holy sites, business hubs, and tourist destinations in less than half the time a bus journey might require. With new lines under construction, rail is set to become a pillar of the nation’s future mobility, complementing the long established bus system rather than replacing it entirely.
